Feeling abnormally tired, Rex, age 60, crawled into bed early. When his wife, Marcia, noticed he wasn’t breathing, she immediately began CPR. Fortunately, Rex’s community participated in Take Heart America’s coordinated response to cardiac arrest. Rex made a full neurological recovery and went back to work as a vice president of faculty relations at St. Cloud State University.

Predictive QI Algorithms for In-Hospital Arrests
About 60% of all in-hospital cardiac arrests are preventable. New predictive algorithms have been developed that, when implemented hospital-wide, reduce in-hospital cardiac arrest rates and save hospital resources. Other new algorithms focus on multiple time-sensitive emergencies, including cardiac arrest, heart attack, stroke, trauma and sepsis. This approach can be used to improve in-hospital quality of care, reduce in-hospital mortality rate and save hospital resources.
